NEWS of Lt Ray KANE

Lt Ray KANE, well known to the old Minden hands who served in ‘C’ Company, 1st Bn
D.E.R.R. as a Platoon commander, came to notice in ‘THE MAIL ON SUNDAY’ on July the 7th 2002. When he left to Battalion in Minden the rumour was he was going to South Africa and that’s the last we heard of him.
The article in the newspaper was headlined
THE CARRY ON COUP
(How a British officer led his men into a cupboard, got shot in the leg and finally overthrew a despotic Sultan for just £100)
The story is a centre page spread describing how in 1970, just after leaving the Battalion he was in the Oman as part of the Sultans Desert Regiment. He there fought with that Regiment. The item finishes up with Mr KANE describing how he ended up flying back to the UK where two pieces of broken ricocheted bullets were removed from his leg in Tidworth Military Hospital, into which he walked, but out of which he hobbled. The full story from the newspaper can be picked up from the Mail on Sunday Website.
The author of this newsletter item who was at the time in Minden, Mr KANE’S signaller had a suspicion that Mr KANE was not like the other officers in the Battalion when, the nice Mr KANE threatened to punch his lamps out when he failed to maintain communications. (This was before human rights were invented!!)
