Hard workers in the community were
awarded for their service, alongside screen idols and sports stars in
the Queen's Birthday Honours. Previously unsung heroes from this
area were awarded MBE's for service in education, youth work and court
service. School Governor Eileen Hargreaves, Youth Centre Manager
Steven Mellers and County Court Manager Ronald Moore were on the roll
of honour, with such famous names as TV Chef Jamie Oliver, Rock Star
Sting, actress Helen Mirren and Bond Star Roger Mooore.
"It's very flattering to be honoured for a job I love doing
any way" said Steven Mellers, 51, of Mill Road Sturry. He
founded and manages the Fairbridge Centre in chatham, part of the
nationwide Fairbridge organisation which aims to motivate 13 to 25
year olds who have switched off from formal learning or working by
providing the opportunity to participate and succeed in activities
they enjoy. Through the activities Fairbridge organises, from
sports to the arts, the young people are trained to develop belief in
their potential and skills. The Kent Centre is in Chatham, with
a satellite centre in Thanet. "We tend to build up a
relationship with them through the activities and often they look on
us as their surrogate family," said Mr Mellers.
